What is the most important thing you can do in Social Media?

Entering the world of Social Media can be very daunting regardless of your background.  So if you are feeling a little (or maybe even a lot) overwhelmed, you are definitely not alone.  The sad truth is that even if you start up a blog and pour your heart into the best blog posts ever written, if you don’t know how to get traffic to your site, you will not get anyone to read your blog.

The most important thing when blogging and becoming successful in the world of Social Media isn’t what you know, how well you write, or how pretty your blog page looks.  Those things are important, but they will not guarantee that you will be successful in Social Media.

So what is the solution?

The most important thing is WHO YOU KNOW!

The good thing about Social Media is that it is really easy to meet a lot of people quickly on the internet, as long as you do it the right way.

Social Media is all about creating relationships.  You want to connect with as many like-minded people as you can within your niche.  You want to make sure that you find people who already have:

*  A massive presence on the internet in your niche

*  Large followings on their blogs

*  Lots of friends on Facebook

*  Tons of followers on Twitter

*  A message that you agree with and can relate to

If you have spent any time on the internet, you can probably think of at least a few people who meet these criteria already.

If not, that is ok too.  I would be happy to direct you to some people who are doing all the right things.  Leave me a comment below, or fill out the information on my Contact Me page.

Spend some time on their sites, learning as much about them as possible.  If you haven’t already, connect with them on as many Social sites as you can (Like Twitter, Facebook, etc.).  Leave comments on their blog posts, retweet their content, send them direct messages, and start to build a relationship with them.

Then take it one step further.

Start connecting with other people that have developed a relationship with them.  Read the comments that have been left by other people.  Follow any links to other Blogs that you find on their website.  Follow the people that they are following on Twitter.  Send friend requests to their Facebook friends and fans.  It is important that you send personal messages to people you are trying to connect with so you can start to build relationships.

This is still not enough though…

There is one final key to making all of this work.  You want to find a tribe.  This is a concept that was completely new to me when I started learning about Social Media, but I have quickly learned that being part of a tribe can make all the difference in the world.

So what is a tribe?

A tribe is a group of 4-5 people who meet regularly (usually once a week) and help to syndicate each others content.  Having a weekly session encourages each member of the tribe to continue to create new content to be syndicated.  It is also great for exchanging ideas, and sharing tips and tricks.

I will be writing more very soon about tribes and some of the other  strategies I discussed in this post, but if you would like to know more about the power of tribes, click on the link below.

Thanks Melissa for such an informative and awesome post.

I only came across the tribe or blogging alliance marketing strategy yesterday , and am already a firm believer that this is an essential part of driving traffic to your blog by syndicating content with others.

Look forward to reading more soon.

    Have a great Christmas,
    Liam

The last thing that I heard was that Twitter was the fastest growing thing on the internet. I tend to favor Twitter since it is simple, easy and fast. Already a lot of businesses are using Twitter including Google Adsense. The idea of who you know is about networking.

Hey Chuck! Thanks for visiting my blog and taking the time to leave a comment. I agree with you that Twitter is a great tool. It is definitely valuable for networking and sharing content. I have met a lot of great people through Twitter, and have enjoyed connecting with them through our blogs and Facebook to build on those relationships. Networking is definitely key.

I agree Melissa, this is a great article. Thanks for sharing! Have retweeted to share with even more people.

Without the net our paths would never have crossed and I would not have been given the chance to have met you.

Here’s to social networking! I have just became a fan on the Facebook Tribe, see you there!

You’ve got my vote! And what you said about, “connecting with someone who has a message that you agree with and can relate to”… it stood out to me. This is usually a big part of what keeps me inspired in what I am doing. Very smart post! thx :)

This is an industry where the old adage of “its not about what you know, but instead is about who you know” plays out so true! It doesn’t matter how much knowledge you cram in your head… if you wont get out and take massive action on that knowledge, to meet the people and build the relationships, your doing less than treading water. Then, when you decide its better to swim than tread water, you may want to find a nice efficient stroke for the marathon (this isnt a sprint, we’re in for the long haul)!

That’s where Tribes come in, they provide a valueable way for you to leverage your time while maximizing your exposure. For the hour or so you give, you get it back multifold from others, how sweet is that!!
