Getting started on the journey…

So the first challenge on this journey is getting past the overwhelmed feeling.  Starting out, it seems like there is just so much to learn and so much to set up, that it can sometimes be hard to know where to start.  Luckily I came across a quote that has given me a lot of perspective on this challenge.

“If you wait until all the lights are “green” before you leave home, you’ll never get started on your trip to the top.” – Zig Ziglar

It doesn’t matter if you know everything you want to know about PPC ads, or if you have started making videos, or that you haven’t written a 20 page article, or that you don’t know the top 10 social networking sites, or what ever it is that you are worried that you don’t know or haven’t done.  What matters is that you make some progress everyday.  All you need to do is start taking small steps and before you know it, you will look back and be amazed at how far you have come.

So what do you do if you are feeling overwhelmed?

Make a list of all of the things that you would like to do or learn.  Don’t worry about prioritizing them at this point, just make a list of as many things that you can think of.  After you have written everything you can think of down, then go back through your list.  Compare the first two items on your list and ask yourself which you would pick if you could only do one.  Then compare that item to the third item asking the same question.

Continue to the fourth, fifth, sixth item, etc… and keep going until you have gone through your entire list once and you have identified the most important item.  Then start again at the top and continue until you have prioritized you whole list.

Now that you have prioritized what you want to do, all you have to do is start taking action.  Start with the item you identified as you most important item.  Do not work on any other items until you have completed the first item.

It is amazing how good you will feel once you start taking small, consistent steps!

    Hey Melissa,

    This is a great post.

I agree that the journey should always start whether you have every detal in place or not.

As they say you could spend all your time getting ready and never getting going.

    Thanks for sharing.

Great Advice! It is easy to get overwhelmed with all of the options for marketing on the internet. Your post outlines a great way to chart a clear course to success. I think I’ll use that technique myself.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the info, heads up. I am learning and this article gives me somewhere to start. My question would be, if you ( being me) are so new at it, how do you find out what it is you want if you haven’t even got that far yet? I read and find out things from tweets and blogs… trial and error I guess? Thanks for your share. Cheers, Holly

What has helped me tremendously is joining the Tribe Mastermind Intensive course. It has been such a hands on, all encompassing experience that I feel that I have finally found the support and direction that I so desperately needed when I first got started. They are getting ready to launch the next course very soon. I would highly recommend taking it, especially if you are feeling a little lost!
