Are we really looking for a way to get rich by doing nothing?

This week I started researching writing copy for ads and sales letters.  I purchased an ebook called Recipe for Riches and something from the book keeps replaying in my head.

I haven’t finished reading the ebook yet, but one of the sections that I did read was the author’s 7 Part “Invisible Selling” FormulaOne of the things that he claims is a “Magic Ingredient” is Simplicity.  He basically says that you need to emphasize the ease of use of your product/system/business or what ever it is you are trying to sell.  Apparently most people are looking for something that they don’t have to work for, or have to learn any new skill to use.  Most people are looking for a way that they can become rich, basically while they sleep or watch tv.  The picture he paints of our prospects is basically of a couch potato looking for the next magic pill or fairy godmother.

This really just makes me wonder.  Is this true?  Are we really all just lazy?

Maybe I am just reading into what he is saying too harshly.  Maybe the couch potato reference is giving me the wrong idea.  I don’t feel like I want to market to couch potatoes, especially not for my direct sales business.

I think I am just going to stick with the word Simplicity.  We are all looking for something to simplify our lives, something that will help free up our time, money, and energy.  That does not mean that we are all looking for a free ride or are not willing to do the work necessary to reach our dreams.

I’m curious to know what you think….

I think you are on the right track. Think simple, but not always easy. The person looking for “something for nothing” is usually the person who gets taken advantage of, gets mad and then helps spread the belief that “Internet Opportunities” are all scams. They will almost always opt out when you mention “work”.

The good news is that there are plenty of people who are willing to do what it takes to make a living online and just need good, honest help. Keep doing what your doing and they will soon turn to you.

    Cheers,

    Jason

I don’t believe we really get anything for nothing. There is always a price to pay and it’s not always money. There is our time, which in this day and time is extremely valuable and we all need to use it wisely.

I hesitate to reply to this honestly. It’s a sad truth that the general public IS looking for the next magic pill. They don’t want a real business, they want a quick fix. I’m not going to point fingers because it has its roots in a LOT of places. So of course its not surprising when marketing guru’s remind us to stress how easy something is… because that’s what sells! This is why its important to define your ideal customer first, and market to THAT customer, not necessarily to Joe Schmoe unless you want to be Walmart. Define who you want and settle for nothing less, sure you’ll have less clients but they will be BETTER clients. You don’t HAVE to market to the masses!

Thanks for your honesty Kimberly! I really appreciate it and your advice to only focus on attracting my ideal customers. You have reminded me why I started exploring the world of social media in the first place, because I want to minimize the amount of time I spend talking to the wrong people.

Yep, too many people are searching for that magic pill because we are being presented with how easy things are in the industry way too often. But I will have to agree with you. Simplicity is the key and just finding better ways to do certain things.

Thanks for you insight, it was very well written.

    Best to you,

I agree that it seems that the majority of people looking for an online opportunity want a quick fix and they are promised them left, right and centre because that is what sells!

Personally, I want to build a business, something that challenges and fulfills me. I simply want the freedom of doing it from anywhere in the world and on my terms!!!

You will naturally attract similar people to you if you communicate from your ‘core identity’ (as Frank Kern would put it) and although it seems your audience is smaller, the people that are drawn to you will be of the right type most of the time!

Half of the fun of this for me is connecting with like minded people that I enjoy working with. It has to be fun or it may as well be just another JOB!

    Great post…

    Kind regards,

    Emma :)

    Hi Melissa,

Great post. I believe that we are looking for simplicity. We find that with everything going on in our lives how do we fit in one more thing. I also believe that we make life way too stressful by trying to put so much unnecessary stuff into it. We complicate our mind with all kinds of thoughts that distract us from what we love. I also believe that we often don’t want to work as much as it actually takes to make things work out! As soon as chaos drops in many of us run and hide! Being true to yourself and what you want can be simple, but there is work involved.
